On the 2nd Saturday of each month (yes, 12 months a year, rain or shine) many galleries, restaurants, offices, retail stores, hair salons and other venues open their doors to the general public to display artworks.  THOUSANDS of people come out (centered in the midtown/downtown areas of Sacramento and along the Uptown Arts District (Del Paso), however outlying areas also participate.  Learn more about What Second Saturday is all about.

So you want to join in!  Great, here's some of the basics (PLEASE READ)

A Quick Synopsis:

  •   Any venue can participate in 2nd Saturday (restaurants, retail stores, hair salons, offices, etc)
  •   You don't need any special permit*or license
  •   You don't have to join any organization or club
  •   You don't have to serve wine/alcohol or food, however its somewhat of a tradition
  •   You SHOULD display artwork and or have artists in attendance
  •   It is up to you to find your own artists and hang your own artwork
  •   *You MUST secure a permit to serve alcoholic beverages (including wine)
  •   *You MIGHT have to secure a permit to have live music
  •   *You should have a business license & resale license
  •   No one is going to promote you - you have to promote yourself!
  •   It is up to you to do legwork and promotion - submitting press releases to the local media (papers) and online sites (such as this one) letting us know what your event is
  •   While venues are welcome to have any hours they wish, MOST attendees come out between 6pm - 9pm
  •  and last but not least, THIS website (and several others) is 100% VOLUNTEER, so don't expect an immediate response from emails or phone calls.  This website receives ZERO monies from any local or state programs or corporate sponsorships or ads.  It is run, updated and underwritten by a local Gallery Owner (Scott Farrell of Zanzibar).

What is 2nd Saturdays all about?

We have a comprehensive page on what 2nd Saturdays are with lot of general information.  To see this, click Sacramento Second Saturday Art Walk information.

Artists looking for a Gallery/Venue to display their art

If you are an artist looking for a Gallery to display your art, you should visit our Artist Information Pages

Who can participate?

Second Saturdays are open to every interested gallery, venue and or artist to participate.  While originally it was primarily galleries that stayed open late, currently hundreds of venues, from galleries, retail stores, hair salons, real estate offices, artist workshops to restaurants, lounges and even nightclubs participate.

Currently, there is / are no requirements and or structured method of getting involved.  There are no fees to be paid, no association to join and currently no special permits (other than if you plan on selling alcoholic beverage and or plan on having live music - if you plan on these, please scroll down for more information).

If you plan on being open for 2nd Saturdays you need to have a business license (issued by either city or county), have a resale certificate (for collecting sales tax if you are selling art you are required by California law to collect sales tax or include it in the purchase price) and you SHOULD carry liability insurance.

Second Saturdays are open to all businesses,  galleries, restaurants, retail stores, hair salons, offices and other venues (you name it, including gyms participate).  You SHOULD be displaying artworks (if you need help finding an artist, we suggest contacting Abundio Montez at Phoenix Gallery - he can place art in your space and give you suggestions).  Soon we hope to offer an online Call for Artists where you can find artists directly.   Scroll down for more information.

Originally 2nd Saturday was only about Galleries.  TRUE, MOST galleries have to make a living off of selling art and some gallery owners are not happy that "everyone has jumped on the bandwagon" trying to get a piece of the pie.  We believe 2nd Saturday shouldn't be only about making money, but providing a venue for artists to display their works and for the general public.  Second Saturday has grown exponentially in the last couple of years - from less than two dozen venues in the midtown area and along Del Paso Blvd to literally hundreds spread out over the great Sacramento area.  Remember, if you are NOT a gallery, you should respect galleries, gallery owners and full time artists who make a living off of offering art full time.  While it is great to get in on the fun, remember there are others who make their livelihood off of selling art.

Is there an official start/end time for 2nd Saturdays?

No, there is no official beginning and end hours for Sacramento's Second Saturday Artwalk (many galleries are open all day), however MOST patrons come out starting about 6pm and most galleries/venues close by 9pm, with some venues staying open later (till 10pm or later).

How many people can I expect?

Tough question with no specific answer.  It depends on where you are located, how you've advertised (we recommend sending newspapers and websites such as this one press releases/calendar listings, sending out postcards to your clients, buying an ad in the SNR's d'Art section (for a fee), listing it on your website, etc.)

Some galleries in the midtown area can host between 900 and 2,000 people in just a few short hours - while other venues are happy to have a few dozen, maybe one hundred.  The more CENTRAL to the midtown area you are and the MORE you promote yourself, the more people you will attract!

Each month varies, depending on the time of year, weather and other activities.  Typically fewer people come out in inclement weather (but people DO come out!).  Some months are slower or have a smaller turnout than others.  There really isn't a defined pattern.

Do people buy art on 2nd Saturdays?

Yes, of course, but also no.  Some patrons see 2nd Saturday as a fun outing with friends, while some do purchase artworks and others get ideas and come back a few days later.  DON'T COUNT on sales - while we all hope to make money, 2nd Saturday are about exposing local, regional and international artists to the people of Sacramento.

Do I have to be in Midtown or Del Paso to be open for 2nd Saturdays?

No.  While the VAST majority of venues is located in midtown, downtown and along Del Paso (Uptown Arts district), many venues fall outside this area - Folsom, Fair Oaks, East Sacramento, etc.  Additionally, several outlying areas (Locke, Woodland, Auburn, Davis, etc.) offer their own version of Art Walks.

Will the city or county art commissions pay for my event?

Sorry - most retail venues will not receive any monies from any type of organization in the great Sacramento area.  You're on your own.

Is there an association, club or organization I must join?

While historically there was a "Sacramento Second Saturday Gallery Association", this association is currently not a legal entity and in no way controls who can participate in Second Saturday events.  This website is 100% volunteer run by Scott Farrell of Zanzibar Trading Company.   We will be working on putting a non-profit organization that will facilitate making 2nd Saturdays more cohesive and giving benefits to its members (cooperative advertising opportunities, free promotion, distribution of maps, etc.)

This website will not discriminate and will, to the best of our ability, offer FREE listings of your business/gallery/venue/art opening/show.  We will gladly place you on our map(s), also FREE OF CHARGE, if you fall within the current boundaries of those maps.

We will GLADLY promote your events and artists if you email us (in word or similar format, please no PDF postcards!) the details.  You should submit:  Event/show name, list of participating artists, brief biographies of each artist, photo(s) of each artist and 3 - 5 photos of each artists works.  Please include location (address as well as nearest cross streets), a contact phone number, gallery/venue/show hours and any special instructions.  We will promote events based on a space and time available basis.  We will consider ALL above submissions for Artist and Gallery (and Music) Venue of the Month.  If for some reason you don't see your venue listed, it may be because of lack of space, lack of photos (photos sell your event!) or simply a lack of time on our part - don't take it personally.

What's the first thing I should do.

Find an artist!  Ask family and friends if they know any artists.  If you can't locate an artist, contact Abundio at Phoenix Framing and Gallery and he may be able to help you in placing artists in your venue.

What's the second thing I should do?

PROMOTE your artist  and the fact you will be open for Second Saturday.  Just because you put art on the walls doesn't mean people will show up.    You should CONTACT the local papers, websites with a press release or notices for their calendars (scroll down for contact information) and consider placing an ad in the Sacramento News & Review's pull-out art section, d'Art.   (contact information below).  You can START by submitting information to this website:  scroll down to     GETTING LISTED ON THIS SITE

If I call you, you'll take care of everything, right?

Wrong.  The webmaster of this website is a businessman himself (a VERY busy one) and while he'll try and help anyone that asks, there are limitations to his good nature.  If you want to participate in 2nd Saturdays, you must do the legwork  yourself.  This page and website are here as a guideline and there is A LOT of good information.  Read it.  Then if you have questions, contact us (scroll down).  Please note:  email inquiries MAY NOT be answered promptly.

Serving Alcoholic Beverages (including wine)

If you are serving alcoholic beverages during your reception and or Second Saturday Art walk, there are specific guidelines and you must secure a temporary permit (for a fee).  Please note that the Sacramento Police Department does spot checks and will issue tickets/fines if you do not secure the proper permits and or are serving alcoholic beverages contrary the rules and regulations of Sacramento city, county and state.

OBTAINING A ONE DAY PERMIT

Normally you must apply for a permit AT LEAST 15 DAYS prior to the event.  Officially, the organization applying for the permit MUST BE A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, however our understanding is the ABC has made an exception for Second Saturday events and allows those participating to use the non-profit status of the Sacramento Art's Council WITH THEIR PERMISSION.

The only requirement is that the Sac. Art Council needs to approve the use of their non-profit status and the businesses must give any/all proceeds (if you charge a cover fee) from the sales of alcohol to the Sac. Art Council's non-profit funds.

You can call (916) 566-6401 (William J. Kinny Police Facility North Station on Marysville Blvd) to obtain information about  "One-day ABC Permits".  Applications can be mailed or walked in.  Emailed or faxed applications are not allowed.  There are two forms:  a police department form and an alcoholic beverage form.  Once approved by the Police Department, the applicant goes to the State ABC office located on Power Inn Rd for final approval and issuance of the actual permit.

You can also Call Friends of Art Commission, (916) 566-3992 - they MAY help you get the forms to fill out, get it approved by the Police Department then over to ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control).  Don't chance it!  Get a permit!  If you have ANY questions, you can also contact:

The Sacramento Police Department offers free training in regards to the sales of  alcohol. Valuable information is covered, such as open containers in public, serving obviously intoxicated patrons, how to properly check ID's,
etc. If there is a large enough group (20+), we can arrange a special training session just for the servers of wine at Second Saturday events.

If you have any questions, or would like to arrange a special training session, please call Jon Houston at (916) 808-0704.

SPECIAL PERMITS

If you are providing LIVE ENTERTAINMENT, you may need to secure an entertainment permit from the Sacramento Police Department.  If you are unfamiliar with the requirements or rules, you can contact the department at (916) 808-0704.  At this time there are no special permits other than for serving alcohol that we are aware of (other than the licenses and or permits required for business in Sacramento City and or County (see below), however this may change.   If you are holding an event in a public area or your event involves anything that might be considered questionable, you may wish to contact the City and or County of Sacramento to verify that you will not need any type of event permit.  It is your sole responsibility to look into this!   This website cannot be held accountable for any lack of permits or rules, regulations or restrictions that you fail to adhere to.

If you're JUST OPENING a gallery/store in Sacramento, there are a number of permits and licenses that you must have, along with sign permits, etc.  While confusing, the city of Sacramento has prepared the following PDF document to guide you through the red tape (requires Adobe PDF reader available for free by clicking here)

http://www.finance.saccounty.net/Tax/PDF/Book2002a.pdf

We encourage ALL Galleries and Venues to have secured the required insurance and liability coverage required for retail businesses.

If you are going to be selling art you must either collect sales tax and or include the sales tax in the retail price of your artwork (you are then responsible for paying the sales tax to the Board of Equalization.  In most cases securing a sellers permit is free and just requires you to visit the Board of Equalization off Hwy 50 & Power Inn Road.  For more information:  http://www.boe.ca.gov/

TRAVELHOST Sacramento

Published bi-monthly and distributed to dozens of local hotels, this publication offers advertising.  We are currently in discussions of having a permanent Sacramento Gallery Page where galleries that pay a small fee will be listed and or have an ad at a very reasonable rate.  Contact us or Bob Nickerson if you're interested!   Scott Farrell of Zanzibar Tribal Art Gallery wholeheartedly believes that advertising with Travel Host is the most effective advertising he does!  Zanzibar receives a lot of out of town patrons who found out about us by seeing TRAVELHOST in their hotel rooms.

    CO-OPERATIVE ADVERTISING

While this site is currently free, we are currently re-evaluating the possibility of doing some gallery co-operative advertising both on this site and in print as well as direct mail.

Midtown and Downtown specialty stores have recently received a lot of publicity for collective promotions and we would welcome dialog from any and all Gallery and venue owners and managers about having shared advertising and or mailings to promote Second Saturday Art Walks as well as art galleries the rest of the month.

In the past we've discussed going to the local papers and publications as a group to get better advertising rates, discussed doing full-page co-op ads where a variety of Galleries have individual ads and a map, hiring of vans and or vehicles to ferry people from one gallery or area to another, etc.    We're all busy people and everyone has reasons NOT to promote their competition... but there are MORE reasons to promote the arts in Sacramento as a unified voice.

We are currently in discussions with Bob Nickerson of TRAVELHOST (a local magazine, placed in hotel rooms that promotes Sacramento sights and businesses) to do a Gallery Page and Map in this publication to promote gallery every day of the month and not just on Second Saturdays.  There would be a charge to participating galleries.

At this stage the Sacramento Second Saturday Gallery Association is loosely organized and we would like to reorganize and have regular meetings and brainstorming sessions.  We're ALL busy business people but many of us honestly feel that what is good for one gallery is good for all of us.   We SHOULD cooperate and help each other out for the benefit of the arts community.  We're planning a mailing in the spring to suggest having an open meeting open to anyone who would like to participate.  Details coming soon or contact Scott Farrell at sacramentosecondsaturday@yahoo.com   for more information.
